Mormon’s Book
The last few days I've been reading in the book of Mormon - the section between 4th Nephi and Ether. Mormon grew up and lived in a time of almost continual warfare and bloodshed. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for him to write The Book of Mormon amidst all of this turmoil and chaos. I'm not just talking emotionally or spiritually but also just logistically. Mormon said that he could not write a hundredth part of all that had been written. He must have had quite a huge library of records to go through and select which parts he should include, and we know that at least some of these records were written on metal plates. I have no idea how he was able to maintain this large collection of bulky and heavy records when all the time the Nephites and Lamanites were marching to war and ransacking cities and pillaging and burning. Well, obviously he was able to preserve and protect through the power of the Lord, but I don't think Mormon gets enough credit for pursuing a career in scholarly research and creating a book that would go on to change the lives of millions all while having to constantly be on the move with all of his records because his people were always at war and he was often right there with them on the battlefield. I know that over the past few years all over the world we have been exposed to all kinds of challenges and difficulties and I have seen so many examples of people who even in the midst of all this chaos have done wonderful and incredible things. It seems like in times of war and plague and civil unrest and financial crisis and environmental disasters that nothing we could do could possibly matter and there is no hope that we could be a part of something good and wonderful and beautiful. But when we are faced with such doubts we can remember Mormon, who created one of the most important books ever written all while fighting for his life day after day and year after year.
