Let Us Go Unto Perfection

“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God” (Hebrews 6:1). If we stop thinking of perfection less as something we must be and more as a destination that we must go towards, we might be able to go a little easier on ourselves. We can be imperfect and flawed and weak and still go unto perfection all the same. We can get sidetracked and backslide and collapse from exhaustion and then when we have recovered we can pick ourselves back up and go unto perfection once again. Perfection is not a destination that we will reach in this life. It is so far away that any distance we cover in this life will be vanishingly small compared to how much farther we still have to go. But we should not be discouraged by these facts. If one step is not much different than a thousand miles, then that makes the one step almost as important and effective as the thousand miles. The distance to perfection is so vast that nobody is really that much "ahead" or "behind" us. It matters less how much progress we make on our journey to perfection than it does that we are actually still going unto perfection. Perfection is the impossibly far, irresistibly bright beacon at the end of our path. Whatever part of life we are in, however far behind or ahead we may feel we are, let us all go unto perfection.
