Cleave

Cleave is what’s called a contronym - it’s a word with two opposite meanings. Cleave means both to separate or divide asunder, and also to stick together or hold fast to.The Lord describes His word as being like a two-edged sword. Like the word cleave, the two edges of the sword have opposite meanings. The Word of the Lord can cleave or cut through all of the lies and delusions and self-deceptions. It can cut through our pride and our anger and our fear. And also like cleave, the Word of the Lord can bind together our faith and our hope and our will. When it seems like life is trying to tear us apart, the Word of the Lord can hold us together. We can cleave to the word of the Lord when it seems like there is nothing else we can hold onto. And we can use the word of the Lord to cleave through all of the tangled noise and confusion.
