Be Kind To Our Future Selves

I mentioned yesterday that sinning is like going into debt. There's a scene from the Simpsons where Marge confronts Homer and says "Someday when these kids are gone you'll regret not spending more time with them." Homer replies, "That's a problem for future Homer. Man, I don't envy that guy," and then he pours a bottle of vodka into a jar of mayonnaise, drinks it, and then falls over. We've got to learn to be kinder to our future selves, to have compassion on them. When we do reckless and stupid things, we're running up debt that our future selves are going to have to settle. And if we think it's hard coping right now, imagine how much harder it will be down the road if we continue with our self-destructive behaviors. For any small changes we can make today we'll be so grateful in the future, and the longer we take to repent and forsake our sins, the more our debt will compound interest, making it harder and harder to quit. But also as I said yesterday, our Savior is always there to settle our accounts with His own blood just as soon as we are willing to turn to Him for help. Let's be so focused on self improvement that we do start to envy our future selves because of how much easier we are making it for them.
